Laughter, the magic elixir

We don’t need a medical degree to know that laughter, good old fashioned belly laughing laughter can cure many an ill. We have all experienced this phenomenon in our lives and so I don’t think we need to dissect the biological mechanics of laughter. Let’s just say it is probably one of the quickest ways to pivot out of a bad mood and snap us out of focusing on the negative. What follows is just a short list of the generally agreed upon benefits of laughter:

  • It lowers inhibitions and allows us to bond with friends and love ones.
  • It most certainly produces those endorphins we’ve all been talking about.
  • It helps to relieve stress.
  • It can ease anxiety and fear.
  • It’s an absolute magnet for attracting positive happy people; and of course we all know that being surrounded with positive happy people is a great way to maintain our own positive attitude and nature. You know the saying; birds of a feather all flock together.
  • It is one of the best ways I know of to pivot out of a negative spiral. I little laughter during a negative moment can jerk you off that negative freight train and bring you back to a more realistic and positive view of what might be happening.

I think I could actually produce a whole page full of examples of the benefits of laughter but my intention here is to provide you with a method of achieving that laugh too loud can’t catch your breath level of laughter that provides the benefits mentioned above!

Sooo… in my last post we explored a couple of party ideas to bond with your friends and have some fun. At the end of the post I asked for some of your ideas. I am so pleased that Susan, a dear friend, fellow woman of a certain age and probably the happiest and most positive person I know took the time to provide us with the following excellent idea:

Susan recommends reading any or all of the Sweet Potato Queens books by Jill Connor Browne. I do not know why I had never heard of or read any of these hilarious books but after reading my first of these funny books I am in total agreement with her. These books feature very funny advice about how to be adored from a group of southern friends who are of that certain age.

Fair warning:  these books are a little bit on the naughty side and not for the faint of heart.

Susan suggests each of your friends purchase a different title. Everyone is to highlight and place their initials next to their favorite parts of their book.  When you finish reading yours you exchange it with your friend.  Here is a list of these very funny books:

The Sweet Potato Queens’ Book of Love (Running Press Miniature Editions)

The Sweet Potato Queens’ First Big-Ass Novel: Stuff We Didn’t Actually Do, But Could Have, And May Yet

American Thighs: The Sweet Potato Queens’ Guide to Preserving Your Assets God Save the Sweet Potato Queens

The Sweet Potato Queens’ Big-Ass Cookbook (and Financial Planner) God Save the Sweet Potato Queens

God Save the Sweet Potato Queens

The Sweet Potato Queens’ Field Guide to Men: Every Man I Love Is Either Married, Gay, or Dead

The Sweet Potato Queens’ Guide to Raising Children for Fun and Profit

The Sweet Potato Queens’ Wedding Planner/Divorce Guide

I read the Book of Love in one day and literally laughed until I cried!  I must say I felt a little odd sitting alone in my house cackling at the top of my lungs. Even my animals were a little concerned but when I finished the book I felt fabulous. I have already started my friends exchange group and am anxious to receive the next book.  (Please consider this an invitation for any of you to join my book exchange circle. Just email me at deborah@womenintransitiononline.com)

These make great girlfriend gifts for any occasion; put them in a pretty gift bag with a highlighter, instructions and a return box, if you have friends from out of town, and share some laughter!

Read, share and trade them with your friends. You will laugh until you cry so it is best not to read them in public!

THANKS SUSAN!
